June 19 Black GoldJust watched the new tv series from the creators of Deadliest Catch for the second time today. Also read into the forums to see what people's thoughts were on the show. While I don't work on the rigs myself, my wife does, she also happened to be watching the show with me. The show certain has potential, it is about time that someone captured what really goes into the gallon of gas the lemmings put in their SUVs. Although I must agree with many of the posts I read in the forums, while the show has potential, they certainly slipped where it counts, they're chose rigs that use dated and extremely unsafe techniques. While this makes for an exciting show, companies such as ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, BP, and especially Shell could not possibly be happy with this show. I work for a part of the industry that supplies the service companies, I sell wire rope, wire rope slings, synthetics slings and many other lifting and rigging tools. From my experience with Shell, and my wife's experience working as a wireline engineer we both found the show enjoyable to watch, but we spent the majority of the time picking at the errors in safety. While we all know this to be a very dangerous job, and I have the utmost respect for the roughnecks, I would have preferred to see more precautions taken. I want to also iterate that this job is an unforgiving job, when the temperatures are 20 and 30 below with a 30 mile an hour arctic breeze blowing through, these men AND women are working 24x7, 365 days a year... yea that means Xmas, and any other holiday you can list. A quick note, as I was reading the forums, I came across one post asking if rigs were really that close together. I can tell you from my own sights, they can be even closer. From the town of Pinedale you can see 3 rigs on the mesa, and if you drive 20 minutes out of town you will stumble upon a cluster of approximately 15 rigs all within a good stones throw apart. I'll post a couple pictures from mid May. Also, environmentalists beware! Roughnecks don't like being screamed at and told to stop what they are doing by some tie-dye wearing, beatnik! Hell, my wife doesn't like it either, and she doesn't spend 14 days straight on the same rig, she jumps from rig to rig as they reach their target depths. June 18 Cable f*!k up!I just love the cable companies, especially the company here. I give him instructions on how I want the install to look so that it doesn't look like SH!T, and what does he do, ignores me! MTF, I'm calling their office tomorrow to lodge a complaint. The best part, he ignores my wife who has the same instructions to give him, in person. The whole idea was keep the exterior of my house from looking like a cluster f*!k of wires, and that was just too complicated for him. I fixed it some what, but I shouldn't have needed to is the issue. The cable internet service is the only one available to my house, else I would have stuck with Qwest and DSL. Their speeds are lack luster and Use Agreement is horrible, limited to 20gigs download a month (please!!! I can do that in my sleep). To put that number in prospective, I downloaded around 20gigs per month from just one site, that doesn't even include activity on sites such as Xbox Live, Zune marketplace, iTunes, or any other sources. I'm only locked in for 3 months, perhaps after that 3 are up Qwest will have realised they missed something and finally acted, but until then.
Meanwhile, I have managed to go for 2 weeks now without internet service to my home, mainly because when we moved out sat service, we finally received the DVR box we had been asking for. Of course I'm stuck in yet another contract with Dish, but as long as the picture is still good. More quickiesBeen kind of busy lately. Still don't have internet at home, so I have to check email and everything else via work. We should be getting cable (blah!) internet today, hopefully the techie understands my instructions. We'll find out how understanding he is when I get home today. The new house is looking awesome, but I'll wait until tomorrow or Friday to upload pics. Katie rolled in from a week in the field and ransacked the place in a matter of seconds. We'll clean up tomorrow and snap some photos and video to share. Last two weeks I spent working on the place though, it's brand new and I'm already cutting holes in the walls! Well worth the holes though. Talk later, me work now... May 20 Quick updateJust realised that it has been a while since I last updated this blog. Honestly, not much has been happening lately. We're just getting ready to move. I had to get my Jeep running this weekend, to some success. My flywheel is once again shot, but other than that I just need to time the engine. Will update more later.
Later April 29 Action!Hey all, So it has been a fair while since my last post. I'll admit, I've been busy. Nothing extraordinary, but nevertheless busy. This past weekend I spent the better part of the weekend working on http://www.hatrickwah.com and http://www.keweenawbrewing.com. In the end, Hatrickwah received a major face lift with more information and photos. Meanwhile, KBC received a relatively simple update, including the requested beer-o-meter that my dad requested as well as a few other touches. The big new though is that Katie and I will be heading to Houghton for our friends wedding as well as some good cruisin' time on the boat. That latest though, I spent the day running a skidsteer (better known as a bobcat) on BLP grounds. We will be receiving steel storage units in the next few weeks/days and the property as it was, was entirely messed up. Now it is nice and level, and the forklift doesn't beat me up as I drive it. I'll upload video later, showing off what was done, until then, later.
